Prof. Aletta Bester-van der Merwe is an Associate Professor in the Department of Genetics at Stellenbosch University. She holds a B.Sc. (cum laude), an M.Sc. Agric (cum laude), and a Ph.D. Agric. Her research focuses on population and conservation genetics, with particular emphasis on marine conservation through the Shark and Ray Genetics laboratory within the Molecular Breeding and Biodiversity Group.
She leads work in elasmobranch genetics and contributes to broader efforts in molecular solutions for biodiversity and conservation at the institution.
