Rate My Professor Chamith Abewardana Wijenayake

Wijenayake's research specializations include multidimensional signal processing, digital hardware architectures for signal processing, FPGA-based system design, hardware accelerators for machine learning, and engineering education. He has contributed significantly to the field through key publications such as 'Computationally efficient light field video compression using 5-D approximate DCT' (Journal of Low Power Electronics and Applications, 2025, with Sritharan et al.), 'Multibeam wideband transmit beamforming using 2D sparse FIR trapezoidal filters' (Journal of Low Power Electronics and Applications, 2024, with Dissanayake et al.), 'Real-time light field signal processing using 4D/5D linear digital filter FPGA circuits' (IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems II: Express Briefs, 2021, with Edussooriya et al.), and 'Online laboratories in modern engineering education: a systematic literature review' (book chapter, 2024, with Tomeo-Reyes et al.). His work demonstrates impact in areas like light field processing and low-power electronics. Wijenayake has earned major awards, including the Outstanding Student Research Award from the University of Akron in 2011, one of two IEEE Circuits and Systems Pre-Doctoral Awards in 2014, and a Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning at the Australian Awards for University Teaching in 2026. He has taught over 5,000 undergraduate students, innovating with interactive polling, video experiments, at-home lab kits during COVID-19, and coordinating large courses like Introduction to Computer Systems and Digital System Design, supported by grants from Echo360 and MathWorks. He also supervises PhD students on topics such as approximate algorithms for multi-dimensional array processing.
