Rate My Professor Chandima Ekanayake

Ekanayake's research centers on condition monitoring and protection of power system assets through advanced instrumentation and ageing models derived from laboratory and field data to improve electricity supply reliability and efficiency. His key research themes encompass lifetime prediction models for assets such as transformers, cables, bushings, circuit breakers, and tap changers amid contemporary grid stresses; smart monitoring leveraging signal processing, data analytics, and artificial intelligence; studies on insulating materials including biodegradable oils, corrosive sulfur in transformers, oil-paper and XLPE ageing, and high-voltage moisture assessment; and power quality event detection. Notable publications include "Investigating Transient Fault Characteristics of XLPE Cable in a Bipolar VSC-HVDC System - Cable Modeling and Field Verification" (2025, IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery), "Swin transformer-based transferable PV forecasting for new PV sites with insufficient PV generation data" (2025, Renewable Energy), "Investigation of cellulose insulation ageing in transformers retrofilled with ester fluids at different service years" (2024, IEEE Transactions on Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation), "On recognition of multiple power quality disturbance events in electricity networks" (2022, IET Generation, Transmission & Distribution), and "Application of operational modal analysis to investigate transformer vibration patterns" (2022, IET Generation, Transmission & Distribution). As a Senior Member of IEEE and Fellow of Engineers Australia, he holds the position of Deputy Director at the Australasian Transformer Innovation Centre, serves on CIGRE Australian Panel B1, and has led IEEE chapters including PES/DEIS Queensland and Sri Lanka section. His work engages the Australian electricity industry and garners international citations from 75 countries.
