Francesco Cherubini is a professor at the Industrial Ecology Programme in the Department of Energy and Process Engineering at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). He serves as director of the Industrial Ecology Programme. His main research interests are in the field of climate change and environmental impacts, with a particular focus on bioenergy and biofuels.
Cherubini holds a PhD in Chemical and Process Engineering from Graz University of Technology. He has contributed to the Fifth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) as a lead author on Working Group III chapters addressing energy systems and agriculture, forestry and other land use (AFOLU). He has also contributed to the IPCC special report on climate change and land. Cherubini is a highly cited researcher whose work includes key publications such as the 2010 paper titled "The biorefinery concept: Using biomass instead of oil for producing energy and chemicals." His research examines topics including the global warming potentials of biogenic CO2 from bioenergy, contributions from timing of CO2 fluxes and albedo, and broader environmental impacts of biomass use. As director of the Industrial Ecology Programme, he leads efforts in sustainable resource management and climate mitigation strategies at NTNU.
