Professor Hiroki Shirato is a Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Hokkaido University. He graduated from the School of Medicine at Hokkaido University in 1981 and holds a Ph.D. in Medicine from the same institution. Shirato serves as Professor in the Graduate School of Biomedical Science and Engineering and as Professor in the Department of Proton Beam Therapy at the Research Center for Cooperative Projects, Faculty of Medicine. He is also Director of Quantum Biomedical Science and Engineering at the Global Institute for Collaborative Research and Education (GI-CoRE).
Shirato has made significant contributions to the field of radiation oncology through the development of real-time tumor-tracking radiation therapy systems and four-dimensional radiotherapy techniques. His work led to the creation of the real-time image gated proton therapy (RGPT) system, which integrates tumor tracking with proton beam therapy to improve precision in treating moving tumors. He has received numerous honors, including the Japan Academy Prize in 2022, election as a member of the Japan Academy in 2023, the Gold Medal from the Japanese Society for Radiation Oncology in 2022, and various other awards from MEXT, the Japan Cancer Society, and Hokkaido University. Shirato has held leadership roles such as Dean of the Graduate School of Biomedical Science and Engineering and has contributed to editorial and committee activities in radiation oncology. His research focuses on theoretical biological modeling, four-dimensional radiotherapy, and translational applications of biomedical engineering in medicine.
