Jeffrey D. Schall is a Professor in the Department of Biology in the Faculty of Science at York University. He joined York University in January 2021 as the inaugural Scientific Director of the York Visual Neurophysiology Centre. In October 2023, he was appointed Canada Research Chair in Translating Neuroscience. Prior to joining York, Professor Schall held positions at Vanderbilt University, including E. Bronson Ingram Professor of Neuroscience, founding director of the Center for Integrative and Cognitive Neuroscience, and director of the Vanderbilt Vision Research Center. He earned his PhD in anatomy from the University of Utah School of Medicine in 1986 and completed postdoctoral training in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at MIT.
Professor Schall’s research focuses on the neural mechanisms that guide, control, and monitor behavior, with particular emphasis on visual neurophysiology, decision-making processes in the frontal eye field and related brain areas, response inhibition, executive control, and computational models of cognition. His work integrates neurophysiological, anatomical, and computational approaches and extends to translational applications in clinical settings as well as intersections with law and neuroscience. He has received awards including the Troland Research Award from the National Academy of Sciences, fellowships from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, James S. McDonnell Foundation, and McKnight Endowment Fund for Neuroscience, and is a Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He served as president of the Vision Sciences Society for its 2019 meeting. Professor Schall has contributed to the development of major research facilities and programs, including oversight of a new neurophysiology facility at York University funded in part by the Canadian Foundation for Innovation.
