William Hintz is an Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of Toledo. He earned a Ph.D. from Southern Illinois University in 2014 and B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. His research focuses on freshwater ecology and conservation, with emphasis on invasive species, fish and fisheries, and environmental pollution and policy.
Hintz has made significant contributions to understanding the ecological consequences of road salt salinization in freshwater ecosystems. Key publications include "A review of the species, community, and ecosystem impacts of road salt salinisation in fresh waters" (2019), "Road salts, human safety, and the rising salinity of our fresh waters" (2022), and "Salinization triggers a trophic cascade in experimental freshwater communities with varying food-chain length" (2017). His work has influenced discussions on water quality guidelines and the need for regulations to protect freshwater systems from salinization. Hintz also participates in collaborative efforts such as reintroduction programs for lake sturgeon in the Maumee River and delivers public lectures on topics including the ecological effects of salty freshwater.
