About Zongyou
Professor Zongyou Yin is a Professor and ARC Future Fellow (Level 3) in the Research School of Chemistry at the Australian National University. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Jilin University in China and his Ph.D. from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. Following his doctorate, he served as a Research Fellow at NTU, Scientist II at the Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE), A*STAR in Singapore, Postdoctoral Associate and subsequently Research Scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Visiting Fellow at Harvard University from 2014 to 2015. In 2017, he joined the Australian National University as Senior Lecturer and was promoted to Professor in January 2024. Yin's career has been marked by interdisciplinary contributions bridging chemistry and physics of atomic-level materials.
His research focuses on solar fuels, batteries, wearables, optoelectronics, and machine learning-driven materials innovations, emphasizing synthesis-structure-device relationships for energy conversion, storage, nanobiotechnology, and environmental applications. He leads the Materials Science and Applications group and the Renewable Fuels group at the ANU Institute for Climate, Energy & Disaster Solutions. Yin has garnered over 43,000 citations with an h-index of 86 on Google Scholar. Notable publications include '25th Anniversary article: hybrid nanostructures based on two-dimensional nanomaterials' in Advanced Materials (2014), 'Graphene-based electronic sensors' (2012, cited over 800 times), and recent works such as 'Electrocatalytic nitrate reduction over Cu2O nanowires partially decorated with Fe2O3 nanoparticles' in Chemical Communications (2026) and 'Pt single atoms/g-C3N4 photocatalysts enabling simultaneous H2 production and CO2 absorption through formic acid photoreforming' in Journal of Materials Chemistry A (2026). His impact is evidenced by annual recognition as a World Highly Cited Researcher since 2015, Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC, 2024), Fellow of the Australian Institute of Physics (FAIP, 2024), Fellow of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (FRACI, 2025), ARC Future Fellowship (2023), Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Early Career Academics (2019), and Advanced Materials Laureate (2024). He serves as a reviewer for leading journals including Chemical Reviews, Nature Energy, and Advanced Materials.
