Assistant Professor in Music Technology and Production

We seek an imaginative and innovative scholar-practitioner who will provide creative research and educational leadership to enhance and expand the existing music curriculum through the further development of live sound, recording engineering, mixing, mastering, and immersive sound (including Dolby Atmos), and music production. The successful candidate will have opportunities to teach both undergraduate and graduate courses and to supervise graduate students. The candidate will be expected to submit an application for a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) grant within the first two to three years of employment.

The successful candidate will demonstrate the capacity to bring a theoretical and practical orientation to recording engineering and music production, model the creative use of audio technology in music production and performance, and contribute to capstone projects and industry connections. Because this is a highly collaborative program, we are looking for a specialist who can also contribute to existing curricular areas of the program, preferably with additional expertise in one or more of the following areas: classical music, jazz, popular music, songwriting/composition for media, or world music.

We acknowledge that within higher education in Canada, traditional or conventional academic and artistic pathways can reinforce biases in the filling of faculty posts. We encourage applications that may not fit all of the qualifications and that challenge our ideas of teaching, scholarship, research and artistic practice. We are particularly interested in colleagues who bring experience in facilitating equity, diversity and inclusion practices within their teaching and research, including in contexts outside academia, such as artistic praxis and community-based work.

First Nations peoples have lived on this part of Turtle Island for millennia, stewarding the land, the water and all that contributes to life in this region. Today, the culture and presence of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples enrich the lands and people of this territory. More than two centuries ago, the Mississauga people welcomed settlers to this territory, providing sustenance and engaging in trade and commerce. Today, York University campuses are located on the Toronto Purchase Treaty No. 13 lands and territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the lands of the Anishinabek of the Williams Treaties First Nations. Our campuses are also situated on the traditional territories of the Huron-Wendat and the Haudenosaunee. Treaty history is foundational, and it is our collective responsibility to honour the land, as we honour and respect those who have gone before us, those who are here and those who have yet to come. We are grateful for the opportunity to be learning, working and thriving on this land, and we commit to learn the truth and be active in the process of reconciliation.
