Posting Number: req27180

Department: Ecology & Evolutionary Biology

Location: Tucson Campus

Address: Tucson, AZ USA

Position Highlights

The Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Arizona in Tucson invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Quantitative, Population, and Community Ecology.

We seek applicants who address fundamental questions in ecology, especially questions in population and community ecology, using quantitative approaches grounded in theory, experiments, observations, or field studies. We also welcome research that examines how biodiversity and evolutionary processes shape ecological dynamics. Relevant areas may include population dynamics, species interactions, community assembly, eco-evolutionary dynamics, ecoinformatics, spatial and temporal dynamics, ecological networks, phylogenetics, biodiversity change, and ecological responses to environmental change.

We are particularly interested in scientists who develop or apply quantitative and computational methods to explain and predict ecological and eco-evolutionary dynamics to global change. Approaches may include mathematical and statistical modeling, machine learning, artificial intelligence, simulation, causal inference, ecological forecasting, biodiversity informatics, remote sensing, or integrating large, heterogeneous biological datasets.

We welcome researchers with expertise in particular organisms or ecological systems, as well as those who integrate across approaches, systems, scales, or levels of biological organization. We encourage research programs that connect ecological, biodiversity, and evolutionary theory with data, quantify uncertainty, generate testable predictions, and leverage the University's experimental, field, data-science, and computational resources.

Founded in 1975, the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Arizona was among the first departments of its kind in the world, pioneering a model for the organization of biology that is now in use in many of the world's leading universities. Our focus is broad, spanning levels of organization from molecular genetics and organismal function as they relate to evolution and ecology, from population, community and ecosystem ecology to biological diversity, phylogeny, and macroevolution.

Our program's unique personality comes from our faculty members who combine theory and empirical work and take an integrative approach to blending disciplines in their research and teaching. We are excited about building a collaborative and supportive environment for research, education, and service.

Tucson is a fun, affordable, welcoming, and livable city (and is now a UNESCO World City of Gastronomy). We have great weather and are surrounded by spectacular scenery, including numerous national parks and wilderness areas. The Tucson area has a surprising range of habitats, amazing subtropical biodiversity, and is only a few hours' drive from numerous tropical habitats in Mexico.
