Description

The Department of Classics at Amherst College invites applications for two positions-a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor of classics and a full-time tenured position at the rank of associate or full professor of classics. The appointment with tenure will be contingent upon a positive tenure review. Both positions will begin on July 1, 2027, and both require a Ph.D. in classics or a related field by the start of the appointment.

In addition to having a well-articulated research plan, successful candidates will be committed to undergraduate and interdisciplinary teaching in a liberal-arts context and must be able to teach with distinction Greek and Latin at all levels, as well as courses of general appeal in the field of Greco-Roman studies broadly defined. There are also opportunities for cross-disciplinary teaching in the college's First-Year Seminar Program and other collaborations. The teaching load is two courses per semester, normally three language courses per year. The ability to direct writing and research at all undergraduate levels will be expected. The successful candidate will also be expected to advise senior thesis projects and to participate in the life of the college and the department.

We seek to identify candidates whose research interests complement those already represented among departmental faculty, and who can help us expand and diversify our offerings. The areas of research specialization are open and include: visual and material culture; rhetoric, law, and democracy; social and cultural history; performance and reception; and knowledge production (scientific and technical). Successful candidates for both positions will be expected to have an original and generative set of research projects and, for the tenured position, to have a superior record of publication, teaching, and professional service.

A Premier Opportunity for Senior Scholars in Classical Studies at a Leading Liberal Arts College

Amherst College is actively seeking a distinguished scholar to join its Department of Classics as an Associate or Full Professor. This tenured position represents a significant opportunity for an accomplished academic to contribute to one of the nation's premier liberal arts institutions while advancing the study of ancient Greek and Roman civilizations.

Amherst College's Enduring Commitment to Classical Studies

Founded in 1821, Amherst College has long prioritized a rigorous liberal arts education that emphasizes critical thinking, interdisciplinary inquiry, and deep engagement with foundational texts. The Department of Classics plays a central role in this mission, offering students the chance to explore the languages, literatures, histories, philosophies, and cultures of the ancient Mediterranean world. Faculty members in the department teach Greek and Latin at every level, from introductory courses to advanced seminars, while also developing broader offerings in Greco-Roman studies that appeal to students across disciplines.

The college's location in Amherst, Massachusetts, places it within a vibrant academic community that includes the Five College Consortium, fostering collaborations with nearby institutions. This environment supports rich intellectual exchange and access to extensive library resources, including the Amherst College Library and shared collections across the consortium. Classics at Amherst emphasizes both traditional philological training and innovative approaches that connect ancient worlds to contemporary questions in ethics, politics, literature, and cultural identity.

Position Overview and Key Responsibilities

The Associate or Full Professor role is a tenured appointment, with the expectation that candidates at the associate level will undergo a positive tenure review process. The position begins on July 1, 2027, and carries a competitive salary range of $105,000 to $135,000 at the associate rank and $120,000 to $200,000 at the full professor rank, reflecting the institution's investment in senior faculty.

Core responsibilities include maintaining an active research agenda with a well-articulated plan for future scholarship. Successful candidates will demonstrate excellence in teaching, particularly in Greek and Latin language instruction across all levels, alongside courses that explore Greco-Roman literature, history, philosophy, and material culture. The role also involves mentoring undergraduate students, participating in departmental governance, and contributing to the college's broader interdisciplinary initiatives.

Amherst values faculty who foster inclusive learning environments and engage students from diverse backgrounds. The department encourages innovative pedagogies that make classical texts accessible and relevant, whether through comparative studies with other cultures or explorations of reception in modern media and society.

Ideal Candidate Profile and Qualifications

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Classics or a closely related field by the start of the appointment. The search prioritizes candidates with a proven record of scholarly achievement appropriate to the rank, including publications in peer-reviewed venues and evidence of ongoing research productivity. Teaching experience at the undergraduate level is essential, with particular emphasis on language instruction and the ability to design courses that attract a wide range of students.

Beyond formal credentials, the college seeks individuals committed to the liberal arts model. This includes a dedication to small-class teaching, close student-faculty interaction, and the integration of research into the undergraduate curriculum. Candidates who can expand the department's expertise in emerging areas—such as digital humanities applications to classical texts, gender and sexuality in antiquity, or global receptions of classical traditions—are especially encouraged to apply.

Strong communication skills and a collaborative spirit are vital, as faculty contribute to college-wide committees and initiatives that support student success and institutional goals.

Application Process and Timeline

Interested candidates should submit materials electronically through Interfolio. Required documents include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a writing sample of no more than thirty pages, and the names of three referees who will provide letters of recommendation. Referees should upload their letters by September 7, 2026.

The cover letter offers an opportunity to discuss how the candidate's research and teaching align with departmental needs, potential contributions to student engagement, and ideas for building a diverse intellectual community. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, with priority given to those received early in the cycle.

Full details and the direct application portal can be found on the college's faculty recruitment page and through professional networks such as the Society for Classical Studies.
