We have an internationally recognised research environment and collaborate with 195 universities and business schools worldwide. NHH is the first choice for students who want to study business administration in Norway. Our activities are characterised by high quality, strong ethical standards, and a collective drive for common goals.
In close partnership with the business community and society, we generate and disseminate new knowledge and create value for a sustainable future. NHH is located in the city of Bergen and has around 3,750 students and 455 employees.
About the position
NHH in Bergen, Norway, invites applications for a permanent position as Associate Professor in Management Accounting and Control at the Department of Accounting, Auditing and Law.
The Department offers a stimulating research and teaching environment with internationally recognised research groups across accounting, auditing and related fields. We are seeking a colleague who can contribute actively to the further development of research and teaching in Management Accounting and Control and to the broader academic environment within the Department.
The Department delivers teaching and supervision in NHH’s programmes at the bachelor’s, master’s and PhD levels, as well as executive programmes.
The Department seeks to strengthen its capacity in Management Accounting and Control and welcomes candidates with an established research profile in the field.
Applicants should hold a PhD in Accounting, Management Accounting and Control, or a closely related field, and meet the requirements for appointment as Associate Professor according to Norwegian regulations. Applicants must demonstrate high quality in research.
Candidates should have an established research profile in Management Accounting and Control. Their research should have clear relevance to contemporary issues in the field, such as management control systems, performance measurement and management, budgeting and planning, digitalisation and AI, cost management and decision-making, sustainability, professional organisations, public-sector management, or organisational resilience and change. International experience will be weighted positively. Candidates should document an established record of research and the potential for continued publication in high-quality international journals in accounting and related fields. Candidates are required to have published at least two scientific articles in the last five years in journals ranked at Level 3 or higher in the Academic Journal Guide (AJG) or at Level 2 in the Norwegian Register for Scientific Journals.
We particularly welcome candidates interested in understanding how accounting and control practices are designed, used, experienced, and transformed in organisational settings. Relevant approaches include qualitative, quantitative, survey-based, experimental and mixed methods, as well as emerging methods using digital, textual, online, or other novel data sources. We particularly welcome candidates who combine methodological rigor with an interest in addressing important questions about accounting, control, organisations, and decision-making. Research involving organisations in the private or public sector will be considered an advantage.
Teaching is an important part of the position. Candidates should have demonstrated teaching competence and be able to contribute to teaching in Management Accounting and Control at bachelor and master levels.
The successful candidate should be prepared to teach both specialised and more general courses within the management accounting area. Relevant subjects may include management accounting, performance management, budgeting and planning, cost accounting, digital management accounting, and related areas. The appointee will also be expected to supervise bachelor and master theses and, where appropriate, contribute to PhD education and supervision.
Teaching quality and the ability to engage large classes are important criteria. This will be evaluated through documented evidence of previous teaching experience in a recognised academic program, interaction with students, and student evaluations. The position involves teaching on average two courses per year as well as some graduate supervision. Candidates who cannot document at least 200 hours of pedagogical coursework when hired must complete the NHH program on basic pedagogical competence within two years.
Candidates must be fluent in English. Proficiency in a Scandinavian language is a strong advantage and will be beneficial for teaching. However, applicants who do not speak a Scandinavian language are also welcome to apply. The appointee is required to master Norwegian at the B2 level (The Common European Framework) within three years of appointment. NHH offers courses in Norwegian for employees who may not initially have Norwegian or another Scandinavian language proficiency.
We seek a colleague who will contribute actively to the academic community at the Department and at NHH. This includes active participation in research groups and seminars, programme and course development, supervision, and other academic and non-academic social activities.
Experience collaboration with businesses, public-sector organisations, professional communities, or other external stakeholders is an advantage. We value candidates who can contribute to NHH's ambition to develop research and education that is academically rigorous and relevant to organisations and society.
NHH is a one campus business school, and the place of work is Bergen. The candidate appointed to the position is expected to interact and cooperate on research with colleagues, attend faculty seminars, take part in recruitment processes, and other activities that aim to strengthen the research and social environment at NHH and the department.
NHH offers
- a competitive salary that is negotiable within the state salary scale. The salary will depend both on the level of competence and length of service. External research grants and teaching in executive programs may offer exceptional candidates opportunities for supplementing the base salary.
- a favorable membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund (SPK) and good welfare benefits such as parental leave.
- research funds for travel and conference participation and a bonus system for publication in top international journals (up to NOK 200 000).
- opportunity to apply for research leave. The period of entitlement for six months’ research leave is six semesters and twelve semesters for a year's leave. Female associate professors can earn the first two years of research leave in half the normal time, and they can receive an annual NOK 35 000 top-up research grant during their first three years of service at NHH.
Note that public health care, public schooling for children, and most other public services are free in Norway. The city of Bergen has a mild, coastal climate and offers rich opportunities for culture and outdoor activities - as well as a family-friendly environment (explore visitnorway.com).
