Domestic Student Recruitment Manager: Bond University's Sydney-Based Push for Enrolments

A Gold Coast university, a Sydney market, and a six-figure bet on domestic demand

The question I've heard most from university partners this season is a version of: why did the domestic enrolment line finally start moving again? For most of the past decade the answer at plenty of institutions was that the local market got leftover attention while international admissions ran at full pressure. That is changing, and Bond University's new advertisement for a Sydney-based Domestic Student Recruitment Manager is one compact, readable marker of the shift.

The role sits in the Office of Future Students and pays between $116,195 and $133,179 a year plus 17.5 per cent superannuation, as a full-time continuing appointment. Applications close at 11:59pm on Sunday 22 November 2026, and interviews are scheduled for Monday 30 November.

Inside the day-to-day brief

The manager plans recruitment strategy and uses data to shape activity. The advertisement also makes the person accountable for what it calls exceptional service to prospective students and university stakeholders. That last phrase is doing real work: it turns a sales brief into a customer-experience role, the kind where the person in the chair is the visible account manager for Bond in Sydney.

  • Build and maintain relationships with prospective students, schools, industry partners and university stakeholders.
  • Drive lead generation and represent Bond across careers expos, school visits and parent events.
  • Use market insights and data to identify opportunities and shape recruitment activity.
  • Deliver consistently high service to prospective students and internal stakeholders.

The new manager joins a domestic team spread across the country, with staff covering Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania, the ACT, South Australia, Western Australia, the Northern Territory and New Zealand. A Sydney-based officer, Cameron Speed, already works the market, so the manager becomes the senior face rather than the first one. Position enquiries go through Julia Nguyen, a Domestic Student Recruitment Manager, on behalf of Jit Loh, Director of Domestic Recruitment.

School visits, careers expos, parent nights and individual consultations fill the calendar. Bond's own campaign materials describe Open Day as the single biggest recruitment event of the year and the engine of lead generation. Because the university runs three semesters each year, with January, May and September intakes, the Sydney manager works a rolling admissions drumbeat rather than a single summer sprint.

Why Sydney, not just the Gold Coast

Bond is Australia's first private, not-for-profit university, opened in 1987 and based at Robina on the Gold Coast. The latest published enrolment figures show 6,188 students in 2025, made up of 3,873 domestic and 2,315 international students. The domestic cohort is the one Bond is deliberately growing, with domestic enrolments up 7 per cent between 2023 and 2024, one of the strongest one-year gains in the country according to analysis by former University of Melbourne deputy vice-chancellor Frank Larkins.

New South Wales has long been Bond's second-largest source of students after Queensland, and Sydney is where an interstate private university can build presence without building a campus. The pitch travels well: an 11:1 student-to-staff ratio, small classes capped well below the big public lecture halls, and an accelerated calendar that lets an undergraduate finish a degree in two years instead of the usual three. The Sydney manager is the human expression of that pitch at school award nights and careers adviser briefings.

What the salary band tells you

At $116,195 to $133,179 plus 17.5 per cent super, the role sits a touch below some Sydney comparators but for visible reasons. The University of the Sunshine Coast recently advertised a Future Student Recruitment Manager in Sydney at $135,820 to $143,310 plus 17 per cent super, and UNSW has run an International Recruitment Channel Lead from about $148,000 plus 17 per cent super. Bond balances the gap with private-sector-adjacent conditions: a 36.75-hour standard week, up to 18 or 26 weeks of parental leave, leave loading of 17.5 per cent, salary packaging and study assistance for staff and dependants.

For an applicant choosing between a Sydney base and a Gold Coast base with monthly travel, the arithmetic matters. The advertisement names Sydney as the primary location but allows the Gold Coast option, and it flags regular travel within Sydney, occasional trips further afield, and some work outside standard business hours, particularly around careers expos that run into the evening. That is not a nine-to-five school-terms job; it is a relationship role with an events calendar attached.

The policy tailwind behind the posting

Five years ago this role would have looked like a luxury. Domestic commencements slid from 2017 through the late 2010s while institutions chased international revenue. The data has since reversed, with almost 390,000 domestic students commencing a degree in 2024, up 3.7 per cent on 2023, and early 2025 intake tracking another 3 per cent higher — the strongest run outside the two COVID years.

Canberra has now leaned the same way. Education Minister Jason Clare said in late 2025 that Australian students should make up more than half of enrolments at the nation's universities, after international shares passed 50 per cent at the University of Sydney, at Murdoch University in Perth, and at RMIT in Melbourne, as reported by Times Higher Education. The annual ceiling of 270,000 new overseas commencements, first announced in August 2024, has pushed institutions to rebalance toward local students. Bond's commercial advantage is moving earlier and more personally in that domestic conversation than bigger rivals can.

The story the manager gets to tell

Recruiting for Bond is easier than it looks because the independent evidence does much of the trust-building upfront. The 2025 Good Universities Guide results gave Bond more top-three placings than any other Australian university, including first in the country for learner engagement and skills development, and equal first for student-to-staff ratio. The Australian Financial Review's Best Universities Ranking named Bond Australia's top university for teaching in 2024, and the 2026 Good Universities Guide repeated the No.1 spot for learner engagement.

Retention figures carry the argument further. Bond's first-year retention rate is 91.2 per cent against a sector median of 77.9 per cent, and its six-year completion rate is 86.3 per cent against 62.4 per cent, according to the CoreBridge Intelligence benchmarking dataset. Those numbers matter in a Sydney living room where a parent is asking why they would pay private fees for a degree from a university three states away. The manager's job is to convert a ranking into a specific conversation for a specific school.

What a credible application looks like

Bond runs the application through its online portal. Candidates upload a resume and a cover letter that addresses the selection criteria: tertiary qualifications in business, commerce, marketing, education or a related discipline; experience in business development, sales, student recruitment or a related field; lead generation and relationship management skills; and the ability to use data and market insights. Current Bond staff apply through the internal People Connect pathway, a signal that the university expects internal competition.

The advertisement names its contact person instead of hiding behind a generic inbox. Julia Nguyen's email is on the posting, and a serious applicant should use it before writing a cover letter — a short conversation clarifies the travel load, the Sydney expectations and the pathway programs more accurately than the selection criteria alone can. Candidates facing the criteria format for the first time may find it useful to start by structuring an academic CV before mapping each criterion to evidence. The broader point about naming a human and fixing an interview date is employer branding, not administration, and the full argument is worth reading.

The complete position description and application portal sit on Bond's careers page, and the role summary is also listed on Academic Jobs.

The step to take this month

For hiring teams elsewhere, the takeaway is not that Bond is advertising in Sydney. It is that the advertisement already does the hard internal coordination: a published salary band, a fixed interview date, and a named contact who will actually answer email, plus a clear statement of which document decides the shortlist. Most faculty panels take weeks to produce any one of those details. The practical step this month is to copy the format before the next advertisement goes live and treat the contact name as a small act of process kindness rather than an afterthought.

Frequently Asked Questions

🎓What does a Domestic Student Recruitment Manager at Bond University actually do?

The manager plans and runs domestic recruitment strategy for New South Wales, generates leads through school visits, careers expos and parent events, and builds relationships with schools, industry partners and university stakeholders. Day to day the work spans presenting to prospective students, tracking market data and promoting Bond's pathway programs and academic offerings. The role supports undergraduate and graduate enrolment targets through the Office of Future Students.

📍Where is the Sydney-based Domestic Student Recruitment Manager located?

The position is primarily based in Sydney. Bond also allows the successful candidate to be based at the Gold Coast campus with regular monthly travel to Sydney. The role involves consistent travel within Sydney and occasional interstate travel, so it is not a desk-bound position.

💰What salary does Bond University offer for this role?

The full-time salary range is $116,195 to $133,179 per annum depending on skills, qualifications and experience, plus 17.5 per cent superannuation. Staff benefits include a 36.75-hour standard week, up to 18 or 26 weeks of parental leave, salary packaging, leave loading and study assistance for staff and dependants.

📅When do applications close and when are interviews?

Applications close at 11:59pm on Sunday 22 November 2026, and interviews will be held on Monday 30 November 2026. The full application details, including the selection criteria, are on the Bond University careers page.

🎓What qualifications and experience does Bond require?

Bond asks for tertiary qualifications in business, commerce, marketing, education or a related discipline, together with experience in business development, sales, student recruitment or a related field. The ideal candidate should also have a track record in lead generation, consultative selling and relationship management, and be comfortable presenting to different audiences.

🛡Do I need a Working with Children check to apply?

Applicants must hold, or be able to obtain, a current Blue Card or equivalent for New South Wales. Because the role involves regular contact with school students, the check is a condition of appointment rather than an optional extra.

📝How do I apply for the Domestic Student Recruitment Manager role?

Applications go through Bond's online recruitment portal. You'll need to upload a current resume and a cover letter that addresses the selection criteria in the position description. Current Bond University staff should apply through People Connect rather than the external portal. A summary of the role is available on Academic Jobs.

🏛What is Bond University's Office of Future Students?

The Office of Future Students is the university-wide team responsible for domestic and international recruitment, admissions and applicant support. Its domestic recruitment staff are based around Australia and cover regions including Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, the ACT, South Australia, Western Australia, the Northern Territory and New Zealand.

🏙Why is Bond University hiring in Sydney instead of the Gold Coast?

New South Wales has historically been Bond's second-largest source of domestic students after Queensland. A Sydney-based manager gives the university a full-time presence in that market instead of relying on fly-in visits from the Gold Coast campus. Bond's 2025 enrolment figures reported 3,873 domestic students out of 6,188 total enrolments.

📆How does Bond's three-semester calendar affect recruitment?

Bond runs three semesters a year — January, May and September — instead of the traditional two. That means an undergraduate degree can be completed in two years and many masters programs in a year. For recruiters, the trimester model means a rolling admissions calendar with more frequent intakes and a faster story to tell prospective students about finishing sooner.

🏆How does Bond rank for teaching and student experience?

The 2025 Good Universities Guide results gave Bond more top-three placings than any other Australian university, including first in the country for learner engagement, skills development and student-to-staff ratio. The Australian Financial Review's Best Universities Ranking named Bond Australia's top university for teaching in 2024. Bond's first-year retention rate is 91.2 per cent, well above the sector median.

📧Who can I contact with questions about the position?

Position-related enquiries can be directed to Julia Nguyen, Domestic Student Recruitment Manager, at junguyen@bond.edu.au, on behalf of Jit Loh, Director of Domestic Recruitment. A short enquiry call before applying can clarify the travel load and market expectations more effectively than the advertisement alone can.
