Casual Academics in Occupational Therapy at Bond University: What the Job Actually Involves

The discipline needs practising occupational therapists who can teach, and the register stays open because clinical teaching is scheduled semester by

The question I hear from health faculty managers lately is a version of this: why does a casual academic register stay open for more than a year? Bond University's occupational therapy advertisement closes at 11:59pm on Thursday 31 December 2026, and that deadline is not a mistake. The discipline recruits on an as-needed basis because clinical teaching is scheduled semester by semester, and the people qualified to deliver it are often the same clinicians holding down full caseloads in hospitals, private practice, aged care and NDIS-funded services.

That is the whole tension in one sentence. Bond, Australia's first private not-for-profit university, wants practising occupational therapists in front of its students from its Robina campus on the Gold Coast. Practising occupational therapists are among the hardest health professionals in the country to hire, and asking one to step away from billable hours to run a tutorial is a genuine trade-off for both sides.

What the role actually involves

The position description lists seven duties, and they matter more than the job title. A casual academic here prepares subject and learning support materials, runs face-to-face teaching, supervises clinical placements, is available for student consultation, designs and marks assessments, finalises grades, and handles the administrative duties that attach to teaching and learning.

In earlier rounds, Bond described these casual positions within the faculty as practical demonstrators or clinical educators. That distinction matters. A practical demonstrator runs a lab or simulation session; a clinical educator supervises students in a real practice setting. Some casuals do both. If you are weighing the role against a clinic day, ask which one you are being hired for, because the preparation and the professional risk sit in different places.

The advertisement is deliberately broad about clinical expertise. The discipline teaches across the full scope of occupational therapy practice, and the person specification names four areas where it most needs depth:

  • Ergonomics, work rehabilitation, return to work and vocational rehabilitation
  • Neurorehabilitation
  • Indigenous health
  • Mental health

Two programs, one teaching bench

Bond's occupational therapy discipline sits inside the Faculty of Health Sciences and Medicine and delivers two postgraduate programs. The Master of Occupational Therapy runs over two calendar years across Bond's three-semester year, with May and September intakes and more than 1,000 hours of practice education embedded. The Professional Doctor of Occupational Therapy is newer, an entry-level doctoral pathway that builds on the master's coursework.

The accreditation stack is unusually international. The master's is accredited by the Occupational Therapy Council of Australia, accredited in the United States by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE), and approved by the World Federation of Occupational Therapists. That is why the discipline needs clinicians who can teach to several standards at once. A session on assessment might be preparing one student for registration with AHPRA in Australia and another for the NBCOT certification exam in the United States.

Teaching happens at the Institute of Health and Sport at Robina, a short distance from the main campus and next to Robina Hospital. Proximity to a working hospital and to the university's own Health and Wellness Clinic means a casual academic's afternoon tutorial can sit next to a placement site they already know.

Who can apply, and why the shortage matters

The baseline is not a teaching qualification. It is full registration as an occupational therapist with AHPRA through the Occupational Therapy Board of Australia, plus a master's degree or higher in a relevant field. The registration standard covers continuing professional development, professional indemnity insurance, recency of practice and English language skills, and a university will assume you can speak to all of them before you step into a classroom.

That requirement explains why this ad is harder to fill than a general education posting. Australia had 29,124 occupational therapists registered and employed in 2024, up from 21,709 in 2020, according to the Department of Health's Health Workforce Data. The growth has not kept pace with demand. Recruitment research from Indeed ranked healthcare as Australia's most talent-starved sector in 2025, with occupational therapy repeatedly named among the hardest roles to fill.

The professional body has been blunt about the consequences. Occupational Therapy Australia's public position is that Australia does not have enough occupational therapists to meet demand across the NDIS, aged care, mental health and hospitals, and that moving practitioners between sectors does not fix the underlying shortage. The peak body points out that OT students complete at least 1,000 hours of unpaid placement and remain excluded from the Commonwealth Prac Payment that supports nursing, teaching, midwifery and social work students. You can read its full position in 'No OTs; No NDIS'.

Distribution is the second problem. Research published in the Australian Journal of Rural Health in 2025 found that, despite the workforce growing by more than 10,000 since 2013, the split between cities and rural areas has barely moved, with private practice growth clustering in metropolitan areas. For a Gold Coast campus that is less of an immediate constraint than it is for a regional one, but it shapes who is actually available to teach on campus.

What the pay and conditions look like

Casual academics at Bond are paid under the Bond University Casual Academic pay scales, on a Bond Employment Contract. Hours are casual and vary with faculty need, so the honest answer to 'what will I earn' is that it depends on the task. Lecturing, tutoring, marking and clinical supervision attract different rates, and the loading that casuals receive compensates for the absence of annual leave, sick leave and job security.

That is the same trade-off across Australian higher education. A Senate committee report on university governance noted in 2025 that more than half of teaching in Australian universities is delivered by casual or sessional staff, and the sector has been under pressure to convert long-term casuals into continuing roles. For a clinician, though, the casual structure is often the point. You can take a single tutorial group, supervise a placement block, mark a subject you know well, or run a one-off simulation session, then return to your caseload.

Ask what the hourly rate covers before you accept anything. If it covers contact hours only, your effective rate drops once preparation and marking are added. That is standard practice across the sector, not a Bond quirk, but it should be known. Also check whether placement supervision attaches extra obligations, including whether you will be named as a supervisor and what documentation the university provides.

How the application works

Applications go through Bond's jobs portal, and the process asks for two documents: a current resume and a cover letter that addresses the selection criteria in the position description. Current Bond staff apply through HR Connect rather than the public portal. The successful applicant must also produce a certified copy of their highest qualification before starting.

Position-related questions go to Dr Tawanda Machingura, Head of Occupational Therapy, on 07 5595 0176 or by email at tmaching@bond.edu.au. He returned to Bond after establishing and gaining accreditation for occupational therapy programs at other universities, so he knows what this discipline needs from its sessional staff.

Use the position description as a checklist. Match every selection criterion to one concrete example from clinical practice or previous teaching, because the panel is screening for people who can teach occupational therapy, not just practise it. If you are drafting an academic CV for the first time, the structure matters more than length, and this guide to a winning academic CV walks through how to present teaching experience without burying it.

The official advertisement on the Bond University jobs page is the only document that states the current duties, criteria and closing date, so read it separately from any commentary. The same role is also listed on AcademicJobs.com for tracking, but applications must go through Bond's portal.

Questions worth asking before you sign

A few questions will save you more time than any cover letter draft. Ask the discipline administrator as well as the contact officer, because the administrator is usually the person who turns your availability into a real timetable slot.

  • How many contact hours does this allocation actually cover?
  • Is preparation and marking paid separately or bundled into the contact rate?
  • Will placement supervision make you a named supervisor with documentation to complete?
  • Does teaching time count toward the continuing professional development log you already keep for AHPRA?

Here is the step I would suggest to the Bond occupational therapy team this month: put the expected contact hours and the preparation-to-contact ratio in the offer email, not in a policy document candidates have to hunt for. Clinicians deciding between a tutorial and a clinic day need that number immediately. It is a small change that respects the person on the other end of the register, and it is the kind of courtesy that fills a sessional bench faster than a rewritten job ad.
