differential equation to describe a given set of observations? Initial efforts exist to learn neural stochastic differential equations from data. Here, we will build on these efforts to adapt deep learning methods for stochastic differential equations in biological systems. Among the challenges we seek to address are the stability of the learned dynamics, enforcing appropriate behaviour outside the training set using prior beliefs, incorporation of delays and boundary conditions, and efficient and user-friendly implementations. The project will be designed jointly with the student, and applied and tested on example data in cell biology, molecular dynamics, or ecology.
Research environment
The student will be supported by the Mathematical Biology group at the School of Mathematics and Statistics (https://stambio.wp.st-andrews.ac.uk/). The group applies mathematical and statistical methods to answer questions in cell biology and disease and maintains strong links with the Schools of Biology and Computer Science. The School of Mathematics and Statistics considers interdisciplinarity a cornerstone of its research strategy. In addition to Mathematical Biology, the student would have access to a wide range of research activities in applied mathematics and statistics. We endeavour to provide an inclusive and supportive environment for all staff and students.
How to apply
To make a formal application, complete the online form at https://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/study/postgraduate-research/apply/
