resistance development.
These materials are used as antiseptics, disinfectants, antimicrobial coatings and preservatives in a range of formulations, where they play an important role in preventing microbial colonisation and infection.
This PhD project will investigate how the molecular architecture of polymeric biguanides influences their antimicrobial activity and cytocompatibility. The successful candidate will synthesise a series of polymeric biguanides with different molecular weights and controlled molecular properties. The polymers will be characterised using analytical and physicochemical techniques to determine their molecular weight, purity and key material properties. Their antimicrobial activity, antibiofilm efficacy and cytocompatibility will then be evaluated against clinically relevant microorganisms and mammalian cells.
These data will be used to establish how changes in polymer structure influence antimicrobial performance and compatibility with mammalian cells. The findings will contribute to the development of safer and more effective antimicrobial materials for topical healthcare applications.
Entry Requirements
Applicants are expected to hold (or about to obtain) a minimum upper second-class undergraduate honours degree (or equivalent) in pharmacy, pharmaceutical sciences, chemistry, materials science or a related discipline. Research experience in polymer chemistry, microbiology, pharmaceutical analysis, antimicrobial testing or cell culture is desirable.
International applicants (including EU nationals) should ensure that they meet the academic eligibility criteria for the programme. Applicants who are offered a place will also need to meet the University's English language requirements before commencing their studies. Further information can be found on the University's English Language Requirements page.
Application Guidance
Candidates must contact the primary supervisor before applying to discuss their interest in the project and assess their suitability.
