Offer Description
Call corresponding to the year 2026 for predoctoral contracts for the training of university teaching staff, within the framework of the State Program for Human Resources, of the State Plan for Scientific, Technical and Innovation Research for the 2024–2027 period (https://www.aei.gob.es/convocatorias/buscador-convocatorias/ayudas-contratos-fpu-2026/convocatoria).
Objective of the contract: Completion of a doctoral thesis focused on marine invertebrate gathering strategies and paleoclimatic reconstruction in the Sella Valley (Ribadesella, Asturias, Spain) from the Lateglacial to the early Holocene (23,500–7,000 cal BP). Its main objective is to analyse archaeological remains of mollusks and crustaceans recovered from Paleolithic and Mesolithic sites at the mouth of the Sella River. These analyses will provide important information on the subsistence and mobility strategies of human groups in the Asturian region, in particular, and the Cantabrian region, in general, while primarily generating paleoclimatic proxies that will clarify the climate changes that affected the northern Iberian Peninsula during the late Pleistocene and early Holocene. The hired person is expected to undertake research stays at different centers, where they will receive training in aspects related to: 1) the biology of marine species along the Atlantic coast of the Iberian Peninsula; 2) isotopic studies (18O/16O), as well as the identification of barnacles using X-ray micro-computed tomography (Micro-CT).
Research project title: INTERACTIONS BETWEEN HUNTER-GATHERER GROUPS AND THE ENVIRONMENT IN THE CANTABRIAN REGION DURING THE PLEISTOCENE-HOLOCENE TRANSITION-PREP2025-168436NB (PrECOmmunities)
Principal investigator: Esteban Álvarez Fernández
The Fellowship will have a maximum duration of four years.
