Lecturer in Health Sciences at North Central College: Application Details and Hiring Context

A Teaching-Intensive Search, Not a Research Slate

North Central College has posted a full-time Lecturer in Health Sciences opening on its PeopleAdmin hiring portal. The college is a private liberal arts institution in Naperville, Illinois, about 30 miles west of Chicago, with a mission built around direct undergraduate teaching rather than large research seminars. That institutional shape matters for this search because the lecturer line will sit inside a teaching schedule, not alongside a laboratory grant portfolio.

The application is submitted through the official North Central College PeopleAdmin posting, and the same vacancy is listed at Lecturer in Health Sciences. Use the AcademicJobs page to compare the posting with similar openings, but treat the PeopleAdmin portal as the authoritative source for required materials and deadlines.

A Teaching-Intensive Search, Not a Research Slate

Lecturer positions at North Central College are teaching-intensive appointments. That means the committee is hiring someone to run courses, labs, and student-facing assessment first, with service to the department second. Research can be part of the job, but it is not usually the weighted center of renewal. The contract is typically renewable, often moving from an initial one-year appointment to a multiyear term after a successful review.

The health sciences lecturer search is a response to demand in the college's pre-health and health science pathways. Students in those pathways are preparing for graduate programs in physical therapy, occupational therapy, physician assistant studies, public health, or other clinical professions. They need faculty who can make anatomy, physiology, epidemiology, and clinical reasoning coherent across multiple courses in the same semester.

Because the posting runs through PeopleAdmin, applicants will work through the standard faculty search workflow: a cover letter, curriculum vitae, teaching statement, and reference contact information. Some health science searches also ask for a one-page statement on teaching diverse learners or a sample syllabus. If a material is optional and it is directly relevant, submit it; committees rarely penalize relevance, but they do penalize missing required documents.

Health Sciences Hiring Is Local, Not Abstract

National data on postsecondary health specialties teaching can make the market look broad, but hiring for a lecturer line in Naperville is concrete and local. The committee is not filling a national research slot; it is filling a course schedule. That changes what candidates should emphasize. A candidate with clinical experience and a record of teaching undergraduates will often read better than one with a long publication list and no classroom contact.

Call her Dr. M. She spent a weekend refining a research-forward teaching statement for a similar health science lecturer search, only to hear in the first-round interview that the department wanted someone who could run a simulation lab and revise the introductory physiology sequence the next semester. The posting had never mentioned simulation. It did mention other duties as assigned. In health science departments, those other duties often mean clinical skills instruction, lab coordination, accreditation documentation, or advising students who are juggling prerequisite coursework. Ask about them before you accept, not after.

Before you apply, build a short list of questions. The posting may not answer them:

  • How many distinct course preparations are expected in the first year?
  • Does the lecturer coordinate lab sections or simulation activities?
  • Is there a path to a longer contract, and what triggers the renewal decision?
  • What course materials budget, if any, is attached to the line?

Pay, Benefits, and Illinois Pay Transparency

Illinois law now requires many employers to provide pay scale and benefits information for positions that will be performed in the state. The Illinois Department of Labor enforces the state's Equal Pay Act provisions, including the pay transparency amendments that took effect at the start of 2025. For a college hiring in Naperville, the posting should state a pay range or explain how to obtain it. If a range is missing or reads commensurate with experience, ask the human resources contact for the budgeted range before submitting materials.

Salary is not the only term that matters. Lecturer contracts at private colleges often include health insurance and retirement contributions, but sometimes exclude paid relocation, professional development funds, or support for conference travel. A two-year renewable contract with no travel budget is a different job than the same title with a small annual fund for teaching equipment. The Bureau of Labor Statistics postsecondary teachers page shows how pay and employment conditions vary by institution type and region, so compare the full package with nearby Illinois institutions rather than against a single national figure.

What This Means for Your Application

For a teaching-focused health sciences line, the application should show that you can run a course from day one. Use specific examples: the course name, the number of students, the textbook or software, the format of exams, and the outcome. Taught anatomy is not evidence. Ran a two-semester undergraduate anatomy and physiology sequence with 36 students per section, redesigned the laboratory practicals, and cut the DFW rate from 22 percent to 11 percent is evidence.

The same rule applies to clinical experience. A lecturer who has worked as a physical therapist, public health coordinator, clinical laboratory scientist, respiratory therapist, or emergency medical services educator brings detail that a purely academic candidate may lack. Name the patient population, the setting, the volume, and the decisions you made. A committee reading forty cover letters will stop on the one that sounds like a person who has solved a problem, not the one that sounds like a list of keywords.

AcademicJobs publishes guidance on the broader move into university lectureships, including how to position a teaching record when you are coming from a clinical post. The site's lecturer job listings can also show how North Central's posting compares with similar searches in the Midwest and elsewhere.

If you have time, do one targeted thing before applying: read the college's health science course catalog and identify two courses you could teach next semester. Then say so in the cover letter, with a sentence about what you would keep and what you would change. That homework is what separates a serious teaching candidate from a generic one.

How to Apply

The application is submitted through North Central College's PeopleAdmin portal at postings/16114. Follow the portal's prompts exactly; do not email materials separately unless the posting says to. The system will ask you to create an account if you do not already have one, and you can save a partially completed application, though the submission date stamp is what matters.

For institutional background, North Central College's official site at northcentralcollege.edu is the better place to confirm the college's mission, enrollment context, health science program structure, and course catalog before you write the cover letter.

Check the posting once more before you submit. Search committees change materials requirements, deadlines, and interview schedules, and the portal version is the authoritative one. If a deadline has passed, the committee may keep the posting open until the position is filled; if that language appears, apply only if your materials are ready now, not two weeks from now.

One concrete next step: open the official posting, note the exact required documents, and put a one-hour calendar block on the same day to complete the first draft of the cover letter. Do not leave the application for the final deadline evening; health science searches in the Chicago area can close or pause once the committee has a viable pool.

Frequently Asked Questions

📋What is the Lecturer in Health Sciences role at North Central College?

The Lecturer in Health Sciences is a full-time, teaching-focused faculty appointment at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois. Lecturer lines at private liberal arts colleges are typically renewable and organized around undergraduate courses, labs, student advising, and department service rather than a research workload.

🔗Where do I apply for the North Central College health sciences lecturer position?

Applications go through the college's official PeopleAdmin portal at northcentralcollege.peopleadmin.com/postings/16114. The listing is also mirrored on AcademicJobs.com under Lecturer in Health Sciences, but the PeopleAdmin application is the authoritative submission route.

🎓What qualifications are usually required for a health sciences lecturer job?

Most health sciences lecturer searches require at least a master's degree in a relevant field, with a doctorate or professional degree often preferred. Clinical licensure or certification in an area such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, clinical laboratory science, or public health can strengthen an application. The North Central College posting's minimum and preferred qualifications are listed in the official advertisement.

📄Is the Lecturer in Health Sciences position tenure-track?

No, lecturer positions are generally not tenure-track. They are teaching-intensive appointments that may be renewable on a contract basis. The exact contract length and renewal terms for this posting should be confirmed with North Central College's human resources office or the search committee.

💰Does the posting include a salary range?

Illinois pay transparency rules require many employers to include pay scale and benefits information for positions performed in Illinois. If the posting does not display a range, candidates can ask the college's human resources contact for the budgeted salary band before applying.

📝What materials should I prepare for the application?

A typical faculty application includes a cover letter, curriculum vitae, teaching statement, and reference contact information. Some health science searches also request a diversity statement, sample syllabi, or evidence of teaching effectiveness. Prepare every document the PeopleAdmin portal lists, and treat optional items as required if they are directly relevant.

🗓️When is the deadline for the Lecturer in Health Sciences application?

The official posting states the review start date or closing date. Faculty searches can close once a viable candidate pool has been identified, so candidates should submit through PeopleAdmin as soon as their materials are ready. Check the posting for any updates before submitting.

🏛️What does the hiring process look like after I apply?

After the committee reviews applications, selected candidates usually move to a phone or video interview, followed by an on-campus visit. The on-campus visit often includes a teaching demonstration, meetings with faculty and students, and a discussion of the lecturer's role in the department.

🩺Can clinical experience substitute for teaching experience?

Clinical experience can be a significant advantage in a health sciences lecturer search, especially when paired with at least some undergraduate teaching, guest lecturing, precepting, or simulation instruction. Effective applications name the clinical setting, patient or student population, and the teaching methods used rather than listing clinical hours alone.

✉️What should I emphasize in the cover letter for this role?

Name the specific health science courses you could teach, describe a course you have taught or redesigned with concrete outcomes, and explain how your clinical or research background will help undergraduates. A short paragraph connecting your experience to North Central College's program is more valuable than a general summary.
