specific studentship, research may explore nucleation and crystal growth; crystallisability; polymorphism, solvates, hydrates and co-crystals; molecular and crystal structure-property relationships; crystal engineering; particle size, shape and surface properties; and the links between molecular structure, processing conditions and final solid-form performance.
The positions sit at the interface of physical chemistry, materials science, pharmaceutical science and chemical engineering. Students may combine experimental crystallisation and kinetic studies with solid-state characterisation techniques such as powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, spectroscopy and microscopy, alongside computational, modelling or data-driven approaches where appropriate. Projects may range from fundamental studies of crystallisation mechanisms to the design of practical strategies for controlling solid forms and particles relevant to the discovery, development and manufacture of pharmaceuticals.
These are highly collaborative projects. Students will join the interdisciplinary DuMoC2 research environment and, depending on the project, may work with academic collaborators, pharmaceutical companies and other industrial partners in the UK and internationally. We are looking for curious, motivated researchers who enjoy working across disciplinary boundaries and want to develop both deep scientific understanding and practical research skills. Applicants from Chemistry, Materials Science, Pharmacy, Physics, Natural Sciences, Chemical Engineering or related backgrounds are encouraged to enquire. Individual projects, funding arrangements, eligibility and start dates vary, so prospective applicants should contact Prof Aurora J. Cruz-Cabeza and send her a CV and a cover letter.
