The University of Utah Health has ranked in the top tier of the prestigious Vizient Quality Leadership Award for inpatient service for the last 15 years and for ambulatory service for the last 10 years. The University of Utah is also a Top-Tier 1 research (R1) institution and a member of the Association of American Universities. Its extramural research funding was $768 million in FY24. The Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine within the University had $312 million in funding this year, with the Department of Internal Medicine (DOIM) contributing over $126 million.

For more than 75 years, the DOIM has had a rich history of providing excellent care, quality research, and valuable education in Utah. DOIM is a collaborative Department, with strong partnerships among divisions, across departments, and with the VA Hospital and the Huntsman Cancer Institute. The DOIM has also seen double-digit-percent clinical growth for several years. Further, the DOIM has a strong research focus and ranked 36th among all institutions and 17th among state/public universities in the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research (BRIMR) ranking, with $45.3 million in total NIH funding in 2024.

Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah is an NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center and a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), supporting and fostering a vibrant cancer research enterprise in a highly collegial environment. Huntsman Cancer Institute has an outstanding history of academic achievement and impact, with $73 million extramural grant funding in FY24, an “exceptional” rating at the last two NCI reviews, a highly collaborative environment, a positive and supportive culture, and a strong commitment to excellence in patient care, research, teaching, training, community engagement, and service. Huntsman Cancer Institute offers state-of-the-art laboratories, including a 225,000 sq. ft. research building which opened in the summer of 2017 and doubled the Institute's research space.

The Division of Oncology is one of twelve divisions within the Department of Internal Medicine. The faculty and advanced practice clinicians cover the entire spectrum of oncology and are dedicated to high-quality, value-driven patient care, education, and innovation and discovery through basic, clinical, population, and health-services research. The Division of Oncology is integrated in the Huntsman Cancer Institute, serving the five-state Mountain West region and beyond. The DOIM and Huntsman Cancer Institute are undergoing major expansions of their clinical operations in the Northern Utah area and are also committed to growth in research of the Oncology Division through recruitment of new clinical, translational, and laboratory-based research faculty.

Clinical activities in the Division of Oncology are currently supported by 30 physicians and 27 advanced practice clinicians who provide outpatient and inpatient care services at four locations in the Salt Lake Valley including Huntsman Cancer Institute and the University of Utah Health's community clinics in South Jordan, Sugarhouse, and Farmington. Clinical activities include subspecialty programs such as the Huntsman Acute Care Clinic, Supportive Oncology & Survivorship (SOS), Family Cancer Assessment Clinic (FCAC), and Geriatric Clinic, among others. Outside of the valley, the Division provides outreach services at the affiliate hospitals of Madison Memorial in Rexburg, Idaho, and St. John's Health in Jackson, Wyoming.

The Division of Oncology has one of the most robust clinical trial programs in the DOIM and at Huntsman Cancer Institute. Research activities in the Division are supported by $20 million of extramural funding in FY24, through federal, association/foundation, and industry awards. In FY24, the Division of Oncology accounted for 45% of all industry trials, 48% of all investigator-initiated trials (IITs), and 46% of NCI and Cooperative Group Trials at Huntsman Cancer Institute. Clinical research is supported by the Huntsman Cancer Institute Clinical Trials Office, Biospecimen and Molecular Pathology Shared Resource, numerous other shared resources across Huntsman Cancer Institute and the University of Utah, and disease-specific clinical databases. The Utah Population Database affords unique opportunities for oncology researchers interested in population-based genetic research, an area of great research strength at the University of Utah.

The Oncology Division is highly committed to the education of fellows, DOIM house staff, PhD postdoctoral fellows, and students. Attracting and training clinicians and researchers is integral to its education mission. Educational activities in the Division of Oncology include a combined Oncology/Hematology Fellowship program accepting 6 fellows each year. The University of Utah offers excellent graduate programs for training PhD students in various departments, MD/PhD students in an MD-PhD Program, and residents/fellows in an accelerated Physician-Scientist Training Program (PSTP) in the DOIM. The Division is committed to advancing junior faculty in conjunction with institutional research training programs, such as the Vice President's Clinical and Translational (VPCAT) Research Scholar Program and the Master of Science in Clinical Investigation (MSCI) program in the Clinical & Translational Science Institute.
