Job description: Postdoc in Sea-Ice Community Analysis (m/d/f/x)

Background

You will work in the Biodiversa project ICEBRIDGE, which is an international project joining social sciences, political science and environmental science to assess the potential consequences of large-scale climate change mitigation measures aiming to delay or counteract sea-ice decline. The specific tasks will be related to estimating the impact of potential sea-ice geoengineering measures on sea-ice communities.

Your Tasks

• The main task will be to analyse sequencing data on sympagic protist communities collected in the Arctic Ocean since 2009. The analysis will entail bioinformatics generating taxonomically explicit datasets, mathematical modelling and statistical analyses relating these community data to environmental variables, using, among others, the latest network analysis tools.
• You will use relationships of community structure with environmental drivers to derive parametrisations of the sea-ice ocean model FESOM, which will be used to develop future scenarios of different geoengineering approaches.
• A minor part of the work may be resequencing of DNA samples in the laboratory.
• You are expected to participate in project meetings in Iceland and elsewhere in Europe, and to contribute to the project report as well as writing scientific publications in leading peer-reviewed journals.

Your Profile

• A PhD in natural sciences
• Proven experience in bioinformatics of sequencing data from polar communities
• Familiar with various approaches to community analysis, including network analyses
• A record of scientific publications proving appropriate writing skills
• Excellent communication skills are important in order to function in a large international project
• Very good English knowledge (approximately equivalent to CEFR level C1)

Preferred Qualifications and Skills

• Good communication/outreach skills
• Teaching skills
• International experience
• Experience in polar field work
