The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, in the department of Biology, invites applications for a
W3 Professorship for Animal Biodiversity
The Bonn Institute for Organismic Biology (BIOB) is seeking a candidate with proven expertise in the field of terrestrial invertebrate biodiversity.
The ideal candidate will have a focus on experimental research, field research, or data-based research and will preferably be involved in evolutionary or ecological mechanisms across species, animal groups, and ecosystems. New research areas with interdisciplinary and integrative research approaches from two or more research fields will be prioritized. Links to existing research fields at BIOB and in Bonn in general are desirable. We expect a solid background in zoological systematics and taxonomy, an excellent publication record, and proven success in acquiring third-party funding.
The use of imaging techniques and/or molecular biological methods in research and teaching is supported by the institute's infrastructure and the university's core facilities (e.g., SEM/TEM, μ-CT, genomics/transcriptomics, historical/environmental DNA, HPC cluster).
Teaching at the bachelor's and master's level is an integral part of the professorship. In particular, the professorship involves responsibility for teaching modules in German and English in the field of “Animal Biodiversity” in the B.Sc. ‘Biology’ and in the master's program ‘Organismic Biology, Evolutionary Biology and Palaeobiology’ (OEP). An excellent and well-thought-out teaching concept is expected. Non-native speakers are expected to teach in German after no more than two years. Active participation in academic self-administration is expected.
The recruitment requirements are based on § 36 HG (NRW).
The University of Bonn is committed to diversity and equal opportunity. It is certified as a family-friendly university. It aims to increase the proportion of women in areas where women are under-represented and to promote their careers in particular. It therefore strongly encourages women with relevant qualifications to apply. Applications will be handled in accordance with the Landesgleichstellungsgesetz (State Equality Act). Applications from suitable individuals with a certified serious disability and those of equal status are particularly welcome.
Applications are to be submitted in German or English with the usual documents (CV, list of publications - separated into original works, book contributions, reviews, without abstracts - third-party funding, proof of teaching experience, research perspectives, and teaching concept) by May 15, 2026, via the appointment portal of the University of Bonn: https://berufungsportal.uni-bonn.de
