The Webb Institute's Glen Cove Campus offers a rigorous, tuition-free undergraduate program centered on naval architecture and marine engineering. Students pursue a Bachelor of Science degree with a unique dual major that combines engineering fundamentals with economics or another complementary field. The curriculum is designed to provide comprehensive technical and practical skills for careers in ship design, yacht engineering, offshore structures, and maritime industries.
- Core Engineering Courses: Introduction to Naval Architecture introduces principles of ship hull design, stability, and resistance. Marine Engineering covers propulsion systems, including diesel engines, turbines, and electric drives. Structural Mechanics focuses on the analysis of ship structures under various loads, using finite element methods.
- Mathematics and Science Foundations: Calculus I-III builds advanced mathematical skills for engineering applications. Differential Equations applies to dynamic systems in marine environments. Physics I-II explores mechanics, thermodynamics, and fluid dynamics essential for hydrodynamics.
- Hydrodynamics and Design: Ship Hydrostatics and Stability teaches buoyancy and equilibrium calculations. Resistance and Propulsion examines drag forces and powering requirements for vessels. Computer-Aided Design (CAD) utilizes software like Rhino and AutoCAD for 3D modeling of marine craft.
- Systems and Materials: Marine Materials Science discusses corrosion resistance, composites, and steel properties in saltwater. Electrical Systems in Ships covers power distribution, automation, and control systems. Marine Systems Engineering integrates HVAC, piping, and auxiliary machinery.
- Economics and Management: Principles of Economics provides insights into maritime business and policy. Engineering Economics evaluates project feasibility and lifecycle costs. Project Management teaches leadership in multidisciplinary teams for large-scale engineering projects.
- Capstone and Practical Training: Senior Design Project involves real-world vessel design from concept to construction, often in collaboration with industry partners. Sea Term offers hands-on experience aboard training ships, focusing on operations, maintenance, and navigation.
This integrated approach ensures graduates are well-prepared for professional licensure and advanced studies. The program emphasizes hands-on labs, simulations, and internships, fostering innovation in sustainable maritime technologies. With small class sizes and faculty mentorship, students engage deeply in research on topics like renewable energy in shipping and autonomous vessels. The curriculum evolves with industry needs, incorporating emerging fields such as ocean engineering and coastal resilience. Overall, Webb Institute's offerings at this campus produce versatile engineers equipped to address global challenges in transportation and environmental sustainability.
