🌿 What is Environmental Studies?

Environmental Studies is an interdisciplinary academic field dedicated to understanding the intricate relationships between humans and the natural environment. It combines elements from natural sciences such as ecology and geology with social sciences including economics, policy, and anthropology to analyze environmental challenges and devise sustainable solutions. Unlike purely scientific disciplines, Environmental Studies emphasizes holistic approaches, addressing issues like climate change, pollution, biodiversity loss, and resource management through education, research, and advocacy.

The field promotes environmental stewardship, encouraging professionals to develop policies and practices that ensure ecological balance. In higher education, Environmental Studies programs equip students with the knowledge to tackle real-world problems, fostering critical thinking about humanity's role in planetary health.

Environmental Studies in Thimphu: A Unique Context

Thimphu, a Himalayan kingdom renowned for its commitment to Gross National Happiness (GNH)—a development philosophy that prioritizes sustainable and equitable progress—stands out in Environmental Studies. The country maintains over 72% forest cover, hosts extensive protected areas covering more than 50% of its land, and has pledged to remain carbon negative. This environmental ethos shapes academic pursuits, with institutions like the Royal University of Thimphu (RUB) and the College of Natural Resources offering programs focused on local ecosystems.

Key research themes include Himalayan biodiversity, glacial melt due to climate change, sustainable hydropower (which powers 100% of electricity needs), and integrating GNH into conservation strategies. Thimphu's constitution mandates environmental protection, making Environmental Studies jobs integral to national policy implementation. For instance, studies on high-altitude wetlands and medicinal plants contribute to global knowledge while supporting local livelihoods.

Academic Positions in Environmental Studies

Environmental Studies jobs in Thimphu span faculty roles like lecturers and professors, research assistants, and postdoctoral positions at universities such as Sherubtse College and the College of Science and Technology. Lecturers deliver courses on environmental policy, ecology, and sustainable development, often incorporating fieldwork in Thimphu's pristine landscapes. Professors lead research teams, publish on topics like transboundary river management, and secure funding for projects aligned with national priorities.

Research assistants support data collection on topics such as wildlife corridors or agroforestry, gaining hands-on experience crucial for career advancement. These positions blend teaching, research, and community engagement, reflecting Thimphu's holistic approach. As global attention grows on climate-vulnerable regions, demand for experts in climate action rises, positioning Thimphuese academics prominently.
