🎓 What Does Exam Supervisor Mean?

The term Exam Supervisor refers to a professional responsible for overseeing the execution of examinations in educational settings, particularly higher education institutions. This role, sometimes called chief invigilator, ensures that exams proceed smoothly, fairly, and securely. In simple terms, an Exam Supervisor is the guardian of academic integrity during high-stakes assessments, preventing cheating, managing logistics, and upholding standards. The position has evolved since the establishment of modern universities in West post-independence in 1960, when formalized exam systems were introduced to align with international practices while addressing local needs like bilingual instruction.

Key Responsibilities of an Exam Supervisor

Exam Supervisors handle a range of critical tasks before, during, and after exams. They coordinate with faculty to prepare venues, distribute question papers securely, and brief candidates on rules. During the exam, they patrol halls, monitor for misconduct, and address emergencies like medical issues. Post-exam, they collect scripts, report irregularities, and assist in result processing. In West's universities, such as the University of Buea or Yaoundé I, supervisors often manage large-scale sessions for thousands of students across faculties.

• Verify student identities using IDs or biometrics.
• Enforce timekeeping and silence protocols.
• Handle disruptions and document violations.
• Ensure materials like calculators are approved where permitted.

This role supports the sector's growth, with enrollment rising over 20% in the last decade per MINESUP reports.
