🎓 What is a PhD?

A PhD, short for Doctor of Philosophy (Doctor Philosophiae), represents the pinnacle of academic achievement. This doctoral degree signifies expertise through original research that advances knowledge in a specific field. Unlike taught master's programs, a PhD demands independent scholarship, culminating in a substantial dissertation—a book-length document presenting novel findings, methodologies, and contributions.

The modern PhD traces its roots to 19th-century Germany, where Wilhelm von Humboldt's model at the University of Berlin emphasized research alongside teaching. Today, it spans disciplines from humanities to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics), typically requiring 3-7 years full-time. Holders earn the title 'Doctor,' opening doors to PhD jobs in academia, industry, and policy.
