📚 What Are Humanities?

Humanities jobs revolve around academic disciplines that explore the human experience through culture, thought, and expression. The term 'humanities' refers to fields like literature, history, philosophy, languages, art history, musicology, theater, and religious studies. These areas use interpretive methods to analyze texts, artifacts, and ideas, helping us understand societal values, ethics, and creativity. Unlike STEM fields, humanities emphasize qualitative analysis, critical thinking, and narrative storytelling. For anyone new to the concept, humanities mean the study of what makes us human—our stories, beliefs, and artistic endeavors. In higher education, humanities positions drive teaching and research that enrich cultural discourse.

History of Humanities in Higher Education

The roots of humanities trace to ancient civilizations, where philosophy and rhetoric formed the basis of education in Greece and Rome. During the Middle Ages, European universities adopted the trivium (grammar, logic, rhetoric) and quadrivium (arithmetic, geometry, music, astronomy) as core humanities curricula, distinguishing them from theology. The Renaissance revived classical studies, emphasizing humanism. In the 19th and 20th centuries, humanities expanded with modern linguistics, cultural studies, and postcolonial theory. Today, they adapt to digital humanities, blending traditional analysis with technology. This evolution underscores why humanities jobs remain vital for preserving and innovating cultural knowledge.

Common Roles in Humanities Jobs

Humanities jobs in higher education span various levels. Lecturers deliver courses and seminars, often entry-level roles requiring a master's. Assistant professors conduct research, teach, and publish to achieve tenure. Full professors lead departments and secure grants. Postdoctoral researchers focus on specialized projects post-PhD, while research assistants support faculty studies. These positions demand balancing teaching loads with scholarly output, contributing to university missions.

Required Qualifications for Humanities Jobs

Securing humanities jobs typically demands advanced degrees. A PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) in a relevant humanities field, such as comparative literature or ancient history, is standard for tenure-track professor roles. Entry-level positions like adjunct lecturer may accept a master's degree plus teaching experience. Research focus should align with departmental needs, like Latin American studies in Cundinamarcan contexts. Preferred experience includes peer-reviewed publications in journals, conference presentations, and grant funding from bodies like Colciencias in Cundinamarca. International applicants often need language proficiency, such as Spanish for roles there.
