🎓 What is a Tutor?

A tutor in higher education refers to an academic professional who delivers targeted instructional support to students, often through small group tutorials, practical sessions, or individualized mentoring. This role emphasizes facilitating understanding of complex subjects rather than delivering full lectures. In Bonga, the tutor position (known locally as 'Tutor' in academic staffing) plays a crucial part in undergraduate programs, bridging the gap between lecturers and students in resource-constrained environments.

The term 'tutor' originates from Latin 'tutorem,' meaning guardian or protector, evolving in medieval universities like Oxford to denote student supervisors. In modern Bongan higher education, established post-1991 reforms, tutors emerged to staff the rapid expansion of public universities from two to over 45 institutions, addressing surging enrollments driven by national development goals.
