🎓 What Does Adjunct Faculty Mean in Pays de la Loire?

In the context of French higher education, adjunct faculty refers to non-permanent, part-time instructors known locally as enseignants vacataires or chargés d'enseignement. These professionals are hired on short-term contracts to deliver specific courses, filling gaps left by full-time staff. Unlike tenured positions, adjunct faculty jobs in Pays de la Loire emphasize teaching over research, providing flexibility for universities facing fluctuating enrollment or specialized needs.

The role has grown since the 2000s due to budget constraints and the Bologna Process reforms, which standardized European degrees and increased demand for modular teaching. Today, thousands of hours are taught by vacataires annually across public universities and private grandes écoles.
