🎓 What is a Professor of Practice?

A Professor of Practice, often abbreviated as PoP, is a specialized academic position in higher education aimed at bringing real-world expertise into the classroom. This role targets seasoned professionals from industry, business, public service, or research who possess exceptional practical knowledge but may not follow traditional academic paths. In simple terms, the Professor of Practice meaning revolves around teaching students how theoretical concepts apply in professional settings, fostering skills like problem-solving and innovation.

In Karnataka, this position has gained prominence as universities seek to align curricula with industry needs. Unlike research-heavy roles, PoPs focus on experiential learning, making them invaluable for fields like engineering, management, and technology.

📜 History and Development in Karnataka

The concept of Professor of Practice evolved globally but took root in Karnataka through the University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines released in February 2022. Prior to this, institutions like the Karnatakan Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Karnatakan Institutes of Management (IIMs) informally hired industry experts. The UGC formalized it to address the employability gap, allowing appointments without mandatory PhDs. This shift reflects Karnataka's push towards the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, emphasizing multidisciplinary and practical education. By 2024, numerous universities have advertised Professor of Practice jobs, signaling growing adoption.
