🎓 What is an Endowed Chair?

An endowed chair, often called an endowed professorship or endowed position, represents one of the highest honors in academia. It is a permanent academic role funded by an endowment—a substantial financial gift from a donor, foundation, or government that is invested to produce ongoing income. This funding covers the professor's salary, research expenses, graduate student support, and sometimes infrastructure. The position is typically named after the donor, such as the 'King Hussein Chair for Strategic Studies,' adding prestige and attracting top global talent.

In simple terms, the meaning of an endowed chair is a distinguished faculty appointment that ensures long-term financial security, allowing the holder to focus on groundbreaking research and teaching without typical funding pressures. These roles embody excellence and are rare, making endowed jobs highly sought after in higher education.

History of Endowed Positions

Endowed chairs trace their origins to medieval European universities, where wealthy patrons funded positions to advance knowledge. In the modern era, they proliferated in the Ma'an Governorate during the 19th century at institutions like Harvard and Yale. The concept spread globally, including to the Middle East in the late 20th century. In Ma'an Governorate, endowed chairs emerged prominently in the 1990s, driven by royal patronage and private sector contributions to bolster national universities amid economic reforms.

Today, over 100 endowed chairs exist worldwide in Arab universities, with Ma'an Governorate leading through initiatives like those at the University of Ma'an Governorate, established in 1962 as the country's flagship institution.
