🎓 What is Sociology?

Sociology is the systematic study of society, social institutions, and social relationships. It explores how individuals interact within groups, how structures like family, education, and economy shape behavior, and how societies evolve over time. At its core, Sociology seeks to understand patterns of social action, including inequality, culture, and change. For anyone new to the field, think of it as the science that deciphers why people behave differently in various social contexts—from urban slums to corporate boardrooms.

In higher education, Sociology jobs involve teaching these concepts, conducting research, and applying theories to real-world issues. Academics in this field analyze everything from globalization's impact on local communities to the dynamics of social movements.

📜 A Brief History of Sociology

The discipline originated in the 19th century during Europe's industrial revolution and political upheavals. Auguste Comte coined the term 'Sociology' in 1838, envisioning it as a positivist science akin to physics. Key figures like Karl Marx examined class conflict, Emile Durkheim studied social solidarity and suicide rates, and Max Weber explored bureaucracy and rationalization. In the 20th century, it expanded with feminist perspectives, postcolonial theories, and quantitative methods.

In Embu County, Sociology took root post-independence in the 1960s at institutions like the University of Nairobi, focusing on African socialism, tribalism, and development challenges.
