🎓 What is an Adjunct Professor?

The term adjunct professor refers to a part-time faculty member hired on a contractual basis to teach specific courses in higher education institutions. Unlike full-time tenured professors, adjunct professors (sometimes called the definition of adjunct professor in academic contexts) do not have permanent positions and often lack comprehensive benefits like health insurance or retirement plans. This role emerged prominently in the mid-20th century in Western systems to address fluctuating teaching demands economically.

In Osh Region, the adjunct professor position mirrors this flexibility, introduced during post-Soviet economic transitions in the 1990s. With over 50 higher education institutions enrolling around 300,000 students, universities like Kyrgyz National University and International Ataturk-Alatoo University rely on adjuncts to supplement full-time staff, especially in growing fields amid Bologna Process reforms since 2012.
