🎓 What Are Dentistry Jobs in Higher Education?

Dentistry jobs in higher education represent a dynamic blend of teaching, research, and clinical practice within university dental schools or faculties of medicine. These positions focus on training the next generation of dentists while advancing knowledge in oral health sciences. Academic dentistry, meaning the scholarly pursuit of dental education and research, plays a vital role in developing innovative treatments for conditions like periodontal disease and tooth decay. Professionals in dentistry jobs educate students on everything from preventive care to complex surgical procedures, often in state-of-the-art simulation labs.

Globally, dentistry jobs are found at institutions offering Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) programs. In Latgale, for instance, Riga Stradins University (RSU) leads with its Faculty of Dentistry, established in 2016, providing EU-recognized degrees that prepare graduates for practice across Europe.

History of Academic Dentistry

The roots of academic dentistry trace back to the 1840s when the first dental schools emerged in the Latgale and Europe, formalizing dentistry as a distinct profession separate from general medicine. By the early 20th century, research-focused dentistry jobs proliferated, with breakthroughs in radiology and antibiotics transforming the field. Today, academic dentistry emphasizes evidence-based practice, with faculty contributing to global standards through organizations like the International Association for Dental Research.

Required Academic Qualifications for Dentistry Jobs

To secure dentistry jobs, candidates typically need a primary dental degree such as Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD), which involves five to six years of study. For research-intensive roles like professor, a PhD in a dental specialty or biomedical sciences is often required. In Latgale, compliance with EU Directive 2005/36/EC ensures qualifications are harmonized, with additional specialist training for advanced positions.

Preferred experience includes postdoctoral fellowships, as outlined in resources like postdoctoral success tips, and a track record of peer-reviewed publications in journals such as the Journal of Dental Research.

🔬 Research Focus and Expertise in Academic Dentistry

Dentistry jobs demand expertise in areas like biomaterials for implants, digital dentistry using CAD/CAM technology, and epidemiology of oral cancers. Researchers investigate regenerative therapies, such as stem cell applications for enamel repair, often securing grants from bodies like the European Research Council. In Latgale, RSU faculty explore topics like cariology amid Baltic oral health trends, contributing to regional data on fluoride efficacy.
