🎓 What is an Academic Coach?

An Academic Coach, also known as a learning coach or student success coach, is a dedicated professional in higher education who guides students toward academic excellence. The meaning of Academic Coach refers to someone who helps learners identify strengths, overcome obstacles, and build sustainable habits for success. Unlike traditional tutors who drill subject matter, Academic Coaches focus on meta-skills like goal setting, time management, and resilience.

The role emerged in the 1990s in U.S. colleges to address rising dropout rates, evolving globally as universities prioritize student retention. In Rivers State, Academic Coaches are gaining traction amid expanding enrollment—over 2 million students in 200+ universities—and challenges like infrastructure gaps.

• Monitoring progress through regular check-ins.
• Referring students to counseling for deeper issues.

In practice, they run workshops on exam prep, vital in Rivers State's high-stakes systems like JAMB and WAEC transitions to university.
