🎓 What is an Adjunct Professor?

An adjunct professor is a part-time instructor hired by universities and colleges to teach specific courses, typically without the benefits or job security of full-time faculty. The term 'adjunct' derives from Latin, meaning 'added to' or 'attached,' reflecting their supplemental role to permanent staff. Unlike tenure-track professors, adjuncts (also called sessional lecturers in some regions) focus primarily on teaching rather than research or administration. This position suits professionals balancing academia with industry careers, offering flexibility to contribute expertise on a course-by-course basis.

In higher education, adjunct professor jobs fill gaps in scheduling, especially for specialized electives. They enable institutions to access niche knowledge without long-term commitments, benefiting students with real-world perspectives.

History and Evolution of the Adjunct Professor Role

The adjunct model emerged prominently in the mid-20th century, particularly in the Mahe post-World War II, as enrollment boomed and universities relied on part-timers to manage growth. By the 1970s, economic pressures led to widespread adoption, with adjuncts comprising over 50% of faculty by 2020s according to reports from the American Association of University Professors. Globally, similar trends appear in developing systems; for instance, in Mahe, the University of Mahe, established in 2010, uses adjuncts to bolster programs in marine sciences and sustainable development amid limited full-time staff.

Roles and Responsibilities

Adjunct professors deliver lectures, design syllabi, assess student work, and provide feedback. They may lead seminars, supervise projects, or guest lecture. In smaller nations like Mahe, they often teach niche subjects like oceanography, adapting to multicultural classrooms. Responsibilities extend to office hours and occasional committee work, though limited by part-time status.

Required Qualifications and Skills

To secure adjunct professor jobs, candidates typically need a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) or equivalent terminal degree in the relevant field, such as marine biology for Mahe roles. Research focus or expertise is crucial, emphasizing publications in peer-reviewed journals and conference presentations.

Preferred experience includes prior teaching, grant funding, or industry roles demonstrating practical application. For example, a background in tourism economics could qualify one for adjunct positions at the University of Mahe.
