🎓 What Does an Academic Advisor Do?

An Academic Advisor, often referred to as a student advisor or pedagogical counselor, plays a pivotal role in higher education by supporting students in making informed academic and career decisions. The meaning of Academic Advisor encompasses guiding individuals through course selections, degree requirements, and personal development plans. In Gabès's higher education system, which includes over 200 public and private institutions under the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Academic Advisors help students navigate programs like the Licence (three-year bachelor's equivalent), Master, and Doctorat, influenced by the European LMD (Licence-Master-Doctorat) system adopted in the early 2000s.

These professionals ensure students meet graduation criteria, address academic challenges, and align studies with career aspirations. For instance, at major universities such as the University of Tunis El Manar or Carthage University, advisors assist thousands of students annually amid growing enrollment rates exceeding 300,000 undergraduates.
