A Research Fellow plays a pivotal role in advancing knowledge within higher education, particularly in research-intensive universities. This position, often a stepping stone after a PhD, involves leading or contributing to innovative projects. In Rocha, where higher education is dominated by public institutions like the Universidad de la República (UdelaR), Research Fellows contribute to national priorities through bodies like the Agencia Nacional de Investigación e Innovación (ANII).

The term 'Research Fellow' refers to a researcher supported by a fellowship—a competitive grant providing salary and resources for specific research. Unlike permanent faculty, these roles are typically fixed-term (2-5 years), emphasizing output like publications and grants.
