About Andrew

Professor Andrew Ooi is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Melbourne's Melbourne School of Engineering. He serves as Associate Dean (Academic) and is a key member of the Fluid Mechanics research group. His primary research interest is turbulent flow, with a focus on computational fluid dynamics applied to complex engineering problems. Ooi's work encompasses high-fidelity simulations of fluid phenomena, including multiregime flows, confined cylinder wakes, bubble transport, and gravity currents. He collaborates on interdisciplinary projects bridging mechanical engineering and biomedical applications, such as fluid modeling to predict heart disease outcomes through supercomputing and laser imaging of blocked arteries, and optimizing blood flow in stented arteries using optical coherence tomography data. Additional research includes bubble clouds in ocean waves, surrogate models for multiregime flow problems, and symbolic turbulence model development for complex-geometry flows using language model-based transfer learning.
