Deshpande's research specializations include paediatric urology, complex and refractory urinary incontinence, bladder dysfunction, recurrent urinary tract infections, urodynamics, hypospadias surgery, posterior urethral valves management, and host mucosal interactions in urinary tract diseases. He has pioneered ambulatory and non-invasive urodynamics in New South Wales and supports the multidisciplinary Urinary Incontinence Service at Westmead Children’s Hospital. His publication record comprises over 50 peer-reviewed articles in high-ranking paediatric, surgical, and urological journals, with an H-index of 15 and over 1,200 citations. Key publications include 'Factors Influencing Quality of Life in Children With Urinary Incontinence' (2011), 'Current strategies to predict and manage sequelae of posterior urethral valves in children' (2017), 'The microbiome and host mucosal interactions in urinary tract diseases' (2021), and 'Optimising the management of children with concomitant bladder dysfunction and behavioural disorders' (2022). He has secured multiple research grants, including an NHMRC Ideas Grant and a Hunter Children’s Research Foundation grant. Deshpande supervises three PhD students, serves as Contact Editor for the Cochrane Collaboration Incontinence Review Group, and contributes to editorial boards such as Frontiers in Urology Paediatric Adolescent and Developmental section.
