About Ben
Ben Bogardus serves as Professor and Chair of the Journalism Department at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut, a position he has held since 2010. He earned a BA from Johns Hopkins University, an MA from the University of Virginia, and an MS from Syracuse University. Before entering academia, Bogardus worked as a newscast producer at prominent television stations, including WJLA (ABC 7) in Arlington, Virginia from 2007 to 2010, KPRC (NBC 2) in Houston, Texas from 2005 to 2007, and WJXT (IND 4) in Jacksonville, Florida from 2002 to 2005. At Quinnipiac, he has progressed through roles including assistant professor and associate professor, achieving tenure, and has taken on leadership responsibilities such as interim associate dean for the School of Communications and chairing school and university-wide curriculum committees, leading a full revision of the journalism department's curriculum.
Bogardus teaches a range of courses in broadcast and digital journalism, including broadcast news writing, reporting for television, podcasting, journalism ethics, and the QNN Newscast capstone course, where students produce, write, report, edit, and anchor a local television newscast. His academic interests focus on broadcast journalism, podcasting, newsroom management, local news, and TV news production. He has produced the 13-episode narrative documentary podcast series "Reporting on 9/11," exploring journalists' coverage of the September 11 attacks, and the six-episode "Hunger in Hamden," addressing food insecurity in Hamden, Connecticut. Bogardus has published peer-reviewed work in the Journal of Media Education, articles in trade journals such as Broadcasting & Cable Magazine, RTDNA.org, TVTechnology.com, and Mediashift.org, and opinion pieces in the New York Post, New Haven Register, and Connecticut Mirror. His professional achievements include an Emmy Award, an Edward R. Murrow Award, two Associated Press awards for best newscast, and a national Edward R. Murrow award for best breaking news coverage. He was recognized as a Noteworthy Journalism Educator by Crain's NewsPro magazine.
