Rate My Professor Denis Winch

Winch's research centers on geomagnetism, with a focus on analyzing the Earth's magnetic field. This includes studies of secular variation and westward drift, daily magnetic changes arising from ionospheric currents and induced eddy currents within the Earth, magnetic storms, solar- and lunar-driven variations, and long-period electromagnetic induction phenomena that inform adjustments to conductivity in the lower mantle. He has conducted extensive analysis of satellite magnetic data from the Ørsted satellite managed by the Danish Meteorological Office, utilizing signal processing techniques and spherical harmonic methods to delineate crustal magnetic anomalies. Comparisons with data from the earlier MAGSAT satellite highlight features such as the equatorial electrojet. His work also addresses daily magnetic variations and ionospheric dynamo theory. Collaborations involve Dr. David Ivers, Associate Professor Robert Stening from the University of New South Wales School of Physics, Dr. Charles Barton, Dr. Andrew Lewis, Dr. Peter Milligan from the Australian Geological Survey Organisation, and principal investigators on the Ørsted and CHAMP satellite projects. This research received support from a large Australian Research Council grant in 2001.

With over 80 publications and more than 1,100 citations, Winch's contributions include 'Geomagnetic effects of the Earth's ellipticity' (Geophysical Journal International, 1999, with Andrew Jackson and Vincent Lesur), 'Analysis of satellite magnetic data' (Exploration Geophysics, 2005, with Jon Turner, David Ivers, and Robert Stening), 'Internal External Field Separation' (Encyclopedia of Geomagnetism and Paleomagnetism, 2007), 'The ionospheric Sq current system obtained by spherical harmonic analysis' (2013), and 'Inhibin B Levels in Hypothyroid Males' (Thyroid, 2013, with Peter Donnelly and Kris Tan). His expertise spans spherical harmonic analysis, ionospheric currents, geomagnetic tides, lithospheric magnetization, and harmonic analysis in spheroidal and ellipsoidal coordinates.
