About Edward
Professor Edward Szczerbicki serves as Honorary Professor in the School of Engineering at the University of Newcastle, Australia. He holds a Doctor of Science degree from the Technical University of Szczecin (1993), a PhD from the Technical University of Gdansk, and a Master of Science from the same institution. His academic career spans over 40 years in intelligent systems development, including 20 years at leading information science research centers in the USA, UK, and Germany. Since arriving in Australia in 1994, he has held positions at the University of Newcastle and maintains an ongoing role as Full Professor at Gdansk University of Technology in Poland. He has been awarded over 20 competitive research grants and coordinated six large-scale European Union and China grants focused on intelligent systems. Professor Szczerbicki is also co-director of the Knowledge Engineering Research Team at the University of Newcastle and has supervised numerous PhD students in areas such as mechanical engineering and smart virtual product development.
Professor Szczerbicki's research specializes in intelligent information and knowledge management/engineering for complex and intelligent systems operating in dynamic environments with informational uncertainties. His pioneering work, including early publications in IEEE Transactions on autonomous systems for decision support, has significantly advanced smart information utilization where information serves as a key resource for intelligent decision-making. He has authored or edited over 300 refereed papers, attracting more than 2700 citations in the last 20 years, along with numerous books such as 'Knowledge Management and Engineering with Decisional DNA' (2020) and 'Smart Information and Knowledge Management' (2010). Key recent publications include 'Society 4.0: Issues, Challenges, Approaches, and Enabling Technologies' (2024, Cybernetics and Systems), 'Decisional-DNA-Based Digital Twin Implementation Architecture for Virtual Engineering Objects' (2024), and 'Toward Human Chromosome Knowledge Engine' (2024). His influence is evident in editorial board memberships for journals like Cybernetics and Systems and Cognitive Processing, over 30 international keynote addresses, conference chairs such as General Chair for the International Symposium on Advances in Intelligent Industrial Systems, and guest editing over 20 special issues on intelligent systems from 2002 to 2020.
