Salkeld is a health economist specializing in patient decision-making, multi-criteria decision analysis, citizen preferences, translational health, and the economics of prevention, pharmaceuticals, and surgery. Over his career, he has published more than 150 research articles, achieving an h-index of 46 and over 10,495 citations according to Google Scholar metrics. He has secured more than $30 million in competitive research funding. Among his highly cited works are the first-author paper "Quality of life related to fear of falling and hip fracture in older women: prospective study" published in the BMJ in 2000 (751 citations), the co-authored "Prospective study of the impact of fear of falling on activities of daily living, SF-36 scores, and nursing home admission" in The Journals of Gerontology Series A in 2000 (1,205 citations), and a paper on status quo bias in Health Economics (191 citations). His research has directly influenced clinical practice, including decision aids for atrial fibrillation screening with iPhone ECG technology, prostate cancer screening, hip fracture prevention, and osteoarthritis management via a multi-criteria tool funded by an ARC grant. Salkeld contributed to policy as a consultant to the Australian Department of Health and Ageing on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme and to the World Health Organization on the Essential Medicines Program. He served on the NHMRC Public Health Panel, the Bowel Cancer Implementation Committee, and as a Director of the Sax Institute board. After 24 years at Sydney, he moved to the University of Wollongong as Executive Dean of the Faculty of the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities and is currently an Honorary Professor there.
