About Guillermo
Professor Guillermo Narsilio Ferrero is the Head of Infrastructure Engineering in the Department of Infrastructure Engineering at the University of Melbourne. His academic qualifications include a PhD from the Georgia Institute of Technology (2002–2006), MsSc degrees in Mathematical Sciences and Civil Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology (2002–2004), and a BEng in Civil Engineering from Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, Argentina. Narsilio Ferrero joined the University of Melbourne in April 2006 as Senior Lecturer in Geotechnical Engineering. In January 2015, he advanced to Associate Professor and received the ARC Future Fellowship for research on geothermal energy with applications in heating and cooling. He currently holds the position of Professor and leads the department.
His primary research interests lie in energy geotechnology, with a particular emphasis on geothermal energy, alongside numerical modelling, multi-scale characterisation of porous materials, geophysics, geotechnical engineering, and soil science. Notable publications include 'Emerging geothermal energy technologies' (Johnston, Narsilio, Colls, 2011, KSCE Journal of Civil Engineering), 'Energy geostructures: a review of analysis approaches, in situ testing and model scale experiments' (Loveridge, McCartney, Narsilio, Sanchez, 2020, Geomechanics for Energy and the Environment), 'Economic analysis of vertical ground source heat pump systems in Melbourne' (Lu, Narsilio, Aditya, Johnston, 2017, Energy), 'Upscaling of Navier–Stokes equations in porous media: Theoretical, numerical and experimental approach' (Narsilio, Buzzi, Fityus, Yun, Smith, 2009, Computers and Geotechnics), 'Heat exchange mechanisms in energy tunnel systems' (Bidarmaghz, Narsilio, 2018, Geomechanics for Energy and the Environment), and 'Impact of particle shape on breakage of recycled construction and demolition aggregates' (Afshar, Disfani, Arulrajah, Narsilio, Emam, 2017, Powder Technology). Narsilio Ferrero leads key projects such as Direct Geothermal Energy: Harnessing an Emerging Technology, Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow in Geomaterials: Physics-Inspired AI Framework, and initiatives on autonomous robotic technology for subsurface investigation and biocementation for pavements. His contributions advance sustainable infrastructure and renewable energy extraction from geomaterials.
