Nguyen's research focuses on teachers' professional learning, curriculum, and pedagogy in TESOL and EAL contexts, emphasizing inter-related aspects such as professional knowledge, emotion, identity, agency, mentoring, and collaboration between EAL and content-area teachers. She employs Vygotskian sociocultural and activity theory perspectives. Her scholarly output includes 48 research items, with her work cited over 970 times on Google Scholar. Notable publications comprise 'An activity theory perspective on Vietnamese preservice English teachers’ identity construction in relation to tensions, emotion and agency' (Language Teaching Research, 2025), 'Language teacher educators as reflective practitioners: an activity theory perspective on identity construction' (TESOL Journal, 2026, with N.
