Shen has produced numerous peer-reviewed publications that advance the field of technology-enhanced language pedagogy. Shen supervises doctoral students researching peer learning in Chinese EFL contexts, digital planning tools, and collaborative writing using automated writing evaluation. He serves on the editorial team of the University of Sydney Journal of TESOL, contributes to the university's TESOL research forum, and is a member of the China Studies Centre.
