Professor Jacob George is the Robert W. Storr Chair of Hepatic Medicine at the University of Sydney's Sydney Medical School in the Faculty of Medicine and Health, a position held since 2007. He concurrently serves as Head of the Storr Liver Centre at the Westmead Institute for Medical Research and Head of the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Westmead Hospital since 2006. A clinician investigator and hepatologist, George holds qualifications of MBBS, FRACP, PhD, and FAASLD. He is renowned for his basic and translational research on pre-cancerous liver diseases, including fatty liver disease (NAFLD/NASH/MAFLD), viral hepatitis, liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, and liver cancer. His investigations extend to hepatic drug metabolism, host genetics in liver disease, liver injury mechanisms, precision medicine, and genetics of hepatitis C.
Professor George's prolific research output exceeds 800 publications with over 67,000 citations, significantly influencing the field, including contributions to redefining fatty liver disease from NAFLD to MAFLD through international consensus statements. His impact is evidenced by recognition as a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher in 2025 and election as Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences in 2017. Major awards include the 2021 NSW Premier's Award for Outstanding Cancer Researcher of the Year, Sally Crossing AM Award for Research from Cancer Council NSW (2021), Okuda-Omata APASL Distinguished Research Prize (2020), Distinguished Research Prize from the Gastroenterological Society of Australia (2017), Westmead Millennium Science Prizes (2009-2023), and Distinguished Professor Award from the University of Sydney (2013). Leadership roles encompass President Elect of the Asian Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver (2024), Honorary Laureate Skou Professor at Aarhus University (2020-2029), and involvement in NHMRC-funded projects exceeding $13 million. George delivers public lectures, such as the Ruthven Blackburn Medal presentation in 2025, and contributes to editorial and committee roles advancing liver health research globally.
