Huang is an expert in nanophotonics and plasmonics. His research group develops plasmonic nanostructures—including nanotubes, nanopores, and nanopillars—integrated with molecular manipulation methods for label-free analysis of single cells, single particles, and single molecules, targeting applications in wearable healthcare and personalized medicine. He leads multiple funded projects, such as Plasmonic nanopore technologies for automatic manipulation and Raman spectroscopic sequencing of single proteins (RamanProSeq, 2026–2029), Next generation molecular sensing (NGSens, 2025–2028), Digital Raman assay for single-molecule protein sequencing in single live cells (LiveProSeq, 2024–2027), Label-free single-molecule digital Raman assay (DigiRaman, 2023–2026), Plasmonic two-nanopore technology for single-molecule protein sequencing (TwoPoreProSeq, 2022–2027), and Wearable Lab-in-a-watch Optical Sensor for Non-invasive Sweat Diagnosis (2022–2024). Notable publications include “Plasmonic bowl-shaped nanopore for Raman detection of single DNA molecules in flow-through” by Y. Zhao et al. (Nano Letters, 2023), “On-Demand Intracellular Delivery of Single Particles in Single Cells by 3D Hollow Nanoelectrodes” by J.A. Huang et al. (Nano Letters, 2019), and “Ordered Ag/Si nanowires array: wide-range surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy for reproducible biomolecule detection” by J.A. Huang et al. (Nano Letters, 2013). Huang maintains international collaborations and teaches courses including Optical Microscopy and Spectroscopic Imaging, and Biosensors and Introduction to Microfabrication.
