Rate My Professor Joseph DeLeeuw

DeLeeuw maintains significant involvement in professional organizations and service roles. He was President of the Ohio Council of Criminal Justice Education for the 2023-2024 academic year and currently serves on committees for the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences for 2025-2026, including as a certified reviewer. At ONU, he co-advises the Lambda Mu chapter of Alpha Phi Sigma, the national criminal justice honor society, alongside Jessica Swanson, Ph.D. His scholarly contributions include an entry in The Encyclopedia of Rural Crime, published by Bristol University Press in 2022. DeLeeuw has presented original research at major conferences such as the American Society of Criminology annual meetings and ACJS conferences. Examples include 'When Shepherds Argue, the Wolf Has Won: Exploring Media Representations of Abortion-Related Lone Wolf Terror Attacks' (2016, ASC), 'Patrol Officer Perceptions of Community Policing, Community Relations Training, and Body-Worn Cameras' with Jessica Regan Swanson (2018, ASC), and chairing panels on reforming criminal justice during the COVID-19 pandemic (2021, ACJS). He advised Delaney K. Fenton's poster presentation 'Community-Based Policing, Crime, and Symbolic Interactionism: How These Three Aspects are Interdependent' at the 2024 ONU Student Research Colloquium, examining how community policing models foster trust and reduce crime through symbolic interactionism. In 2022, DeLeeuw was honored in Ohio Northern University's Employee Recognition program for his contributions to Criminal Justice.
